I'm eating dinner at some restaurant in Michigan on August 16, 1977, and the waitress tells us that Elvis Presley had died. I will never forget that moment or that waitress, or my aunt's reaction. I was on vacation with my aunt and uncle and cousin. I had no clue what I was going to be in for when I got home the next day!We arrived home the day after Elvis had died. As we turned the corner onto my block you could hear Elvis music blaring down the road. I was so embarrassed, cause I knew it was coming from my house!! My mom was a HUGE Elvis fan. Sure enough, we walk in my house and there's my mom literally balling her eyes out in the living room listening to REALLY LOUD Elvis music. Again, I was so embarrassed.
(this is the Michael Jackson I like to remember and love)As time went on, Michael Jackson provided so many FUN memories, especially in my college days:
The Thriller Video: The first time I ever saw the Thriller video was at midnight at Dibbos in Hudson, WI. Everybody stopped dancing and just watched it. It was just incredible!
Billy Jean: Every song on that album and the Thriller album is awesome and gives me so many wonderfully fun memories of times when we were still innocent, and free, and YOUNG.
Michael's Moon Walk: How on earth did he do that? And no one could ever duplicate it the way he did it. (so sad to write about him in the past tense)
The Pepsi Commercial: Here's something I haven't heard about today. Remember when his hair caught fire filming the Pepsi commercial. Now that was funny, but not really.
Anyway.... even though Michael Jackson ended up such a different person in the past years, his music and his videos, and all the work he has done for charities is timeless. He is a legend.
*An interesting observation: Elvis died when he was just 42. My mom was 42, and I was entering 7th grade. Now I'm 43 and my son is entering 6th grade. I just find that interesting - the ages reflect what I had titled this post as - Michael Jackson was the Elvis of our generation.

When Elvis died I was 3 months short of my 16th birthday.
Today, my daughter is 3 months short of her 16th.
So true. Even my kids of 7 and 10 are shocked at MJ's death.

A nice tribute. I was 4 when Elvis died. I still remember my Dad talking to me about it.
My younger son is 4 now. Both my children have heard me play my Thriller album, but I think like me, they won't understand his impact until they are older.

I love Michael growing up. I was concerned with his life the last few years, but, you're right! His talent and what he did for charities was a wonderful thing.
Like you and the others, I was totally shocked when I heard the news - I knew the last pictures I'd seen of him he'd looked frail and pale, but then again, he's looked that way for a while, so I didn't expect this. Nor did I expect to feel so heartbroken. RIP Michael.

I was 19 when Elvis died, driving home from Lake Placid, NY to Philadelphia, PA by myself. I heard the news about 2 hours from home, with no one else to share it with (you know back before cell phones!)
I almost chocked on my tuna noodle casserole when the news came across the TV last evening, especially after having heard about Farrah earlier.
I was 16 when Elvis died. My daughter is 16 now as Michael Jackson died.

Excellent point. I believe I was 8 when Elvis died and now my son is the same age. Personally Elvis' passing was more monumetal to me, I still love his music and lousy movies but you are so right about the generational thing.
It's interesting to compare him to Elvis because in both cases they went through a transformation of sorts. Most everyone prefers their original versions.
He was brilliant, iconic, and will never be forgotten for the incredible impact he has had on the music industry.
